About Me

Let Me Introduce Myself

Hello, my name is Maia Talarico, and ever since I was three years old, I have enjoyed the art of creating and telling stories. For the early stages of my life, my grandparents taught me their love of art and expression. Regardless of the medium, and taking their lessons further, I discovered the beauty in being able to tell captivating stories through the ever changing media platform.

I graduated from Iowa State University with a B.A in Performance Art, where I pursued acting, directing, and stage management. I’m passionate about telling stories, especially if that means sharing with communities’ the different perspectives and truths about another person’s life, culture, etc.

What I’m Doing Now

Recently, I just finished working towards achieving my Master of Arts Communication degree in Communication Branding at Drake University. Through my life and educational experiences, I realized that communication is an intrinsic need within all cultures and societies. With my new skills and outlook on life, I hope to better help businesses and communities thrive within this ever-changing world of verbal and digital communication.

Over the past six years, I’ve been working as an Associate Teacher with Des Moines Public Schools. Through my work with children in special education, I have learned the value and importance of celebrating the small wins throughout the day. Most of the children that I interact with have extreme social and behavioral issues, so being open minded to discovering new communication techniques to guarantee their success has been an integral part of my role within the DMPS district.

Passion and Activism

Outside of school and work, I try to stay active in my community as much as possible. During the summer months I work as a lifeguard for a gym in West Des Moines. I try to shop local as much as possible and because I’m vegan, I almost exclusively try to support local businesses and farmers. Lastly, I stay knowledgeable about current events and advocate for change in issues that pertain to marginalized groups such as those surrounding people of color and the LGBTQ+ community.

Born and raised in Des Moines, IA, I’m a true Midwesterner that is guilty of occasionally saying, “Ope,” playing bags, and adding vegan ranch to what others deem unnecessary dishes. I love camping and spending time outdoors with my friends and family. I also enjoy traveling around the country and experiencing new things. Hopefully soon, I want to travel internationally to better understand and appreciate different cultures, histories, and all the amazing people that make up our world.
